hi gus,
I have previously posted about different software with different opinions
of what frequencies are related to what notenumbers and note-names
after some research
middle C = approx 260.1 Hz = C4 = midi 48
I think the Pitch part of ParchMakerLite has it as 260 Hz = C5 = midi 60
but maybe I am misunderstanding something... also I remember 2Pat was in
agreement with PatchMaker
meanwhile patinfo and convert have it right I think...
are these bugs or is there a reason for the discrepancy ?

There're some good patches in the files propatsX.zip (where X is a number from
1 to 5) that you can find at any of the GUS ftp sites. Whithin those patches
I've found a good one of an acoustic guitar. It sounds very good on the
mid-low octaves. Try it.

I have the same configuration and the same problem. The first you should do is
to find out if your computer supports NMI. Try to load SBOS, if that works (as
it does in my PC), NMI is not the problem. I've tried to get an answer from
the guys from GUS but ,at least here in the Netherlands, they couldn't find
the reason of the problem.
Perhaps anybody else knows how to solve this....
BTW, tired of the lack of support from the GUS guys I've solved the problem
just using another sound card and its midi interface to connect my keyboard
and everything works just fine.

It should work. I have Win 3.1 and a non-MAX GUS, but I'm sure that won't
make any difference. Can you use one of the other apps on the GUS FTP
site (e.g. midimon) just to see if any data arrives from the synth
under Windows? Some people have a problem with motherboards which
do not support the NMI (non-maskable interrrupt), which I believe is
used by SBOS and by MIDI-in - I'm not sure if MIDI-in under DOS uses
it, because you say that this works. Are you sure that you have got
the patches loaded that you are trying to play and that the lack
of sound is not just due to the patch not being loaded? Try using
Patch Manager with the MIDI Thru option.
